Eyelid Surgery FAQ
How long does eyelid surgery take?
Upper eyelid surgery typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes for both eyes. This procedure is commonly performed in-office with local anesthesia or in an operating room with light sedation. The process begins with precise markings on the eyelids, followed by the application of local anesthetic. After the procedure, cold compresses are applied immediately, and an antibiotic ointment is used on the incisions.
For lower eyelid surgery and brow lifts, the procedure is more often done in an operating room setting under sedation or general anesthesia. If you are undergoing ptosis surgery, some cooperation may be required during the procedure to ensure the best results. Patients typically find the experience comfortable with minimal discomfort.
Can my eyelid surgery take place at the Lunata office?
Yes! Dr. Eliasieh performs many eyelid surgeries, including upper blepharoplasty and ptosis repair, in our Berkeley office. The Lunata team provides exceptional care, prioritizing your comfort and safety in a serene, private setting. In addition to local anesthesia, we offer a method of oral sedation where patients take a prescribed calming medication, allowing them to remain conscious but achieve a deeper level of relaxation during the procedure. This combined approach ensures a pain-free and comfortable experience.
Unlike a hospital or surgery center, Lunata offers an intimate and spa-like environment where you are the sole focus. Every aspect of your care is thoughtfully considered to meet your needs. With the consultation, surgery, and aftercare all managed in one place, you’ll enjoy a seamless experience that saves you time, effort, and costs less than larger facilities.
Eyelid surgery is a relatively safe procedure with a low risk of complication and Dr. Eliasieh is a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon with advanced training in both ophthalmology and plastic surgery. He brings a light touch and high level of precision to all of his surgeries, and has designed the Lunata procedure room to be a state-of-the-art facility for premium patient care.
How should I prepare for surgery?
Before your surgery, you will receive detailed instructions. It’s important to stop taking Aspirin, NSAIDs (such as Advil, Motrin, and Aleve), and certain herbal supplements or vitamins at least two weeks before your procedure, as these can thin the blood and lead to increased bruising. Prescription medications like Aspirin, Coumadin, or Plavix should only be stopped after consulting with your physician. Additionally, homeopathic remedies such as Arnica and Bromelain may help minimize bruising and can be started one week prior to surgery.
You will be provided with prescriptions before the surgery to ensure you have everything ready at home for a smooth recovery. Smokers are advised to stop smoking two weeks before surgery, as nicotine can impede the healing process. To prepare for your recovery, it’s recommended to gather the following items:
- Ziplock bags for ice packs
- Frozen peas or ice
- Gauze and Q-tips
- Extra Strength Tylenol
Make sure to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after your surgery and plan for rest in the days following your procedure. Avoid wearing makeup on the day of surgery, and prepare your home in advance to minimize the need for strenuous activities such as household chores or childcare.
What is the typical recovery time after eyelid surgery?
Recovery times can vary from patient to patient, depending on the specific procedure performed, individual health, and other factors. For upper eyelid surgery, most patients require about 5 to 7 days off from work. If both upper and lower eyelid surgery is performed, recovery may extend to 10 to 14 days.
Most patients can resume light activities, such as driving, within 2 to 3 days. However, swelling and bruising may influence your decision on when to return to work, even if you feel physically well. The extent of bruising and swelling is highly individual—some patients experience mild bruising that resolves within 2 to 4 days, while others may notice more significant swelling lasting up to 10 to 14 days.
Applying cold compresses, elevating your head, and taking Arnica or Bromelain can help reduce swelling. It’s important to avoid heavy lifting, bending, or straining during the first week of recovery. After one week, most patients can gradually return to normal physical activities. Makeup can be applied starting two weeks after surgery to cover any residual bruising.
What should I do after surgery?
Following your surgery, we will thoroughly review aftercare instructions. You will be scheduled for a follow-up visit approximately 6 to 8 days after surgery for suture removal. A second follow-up appointment is typically set between 8 and 12 weeks, depending on the procedure.
What are the potential risks of eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a relatively safe procedure with a low risk of complications, especially when compared to more invasive plastic surgeries. While the consent form outlines possible risks, the majority of patients experience successful outcomes and are satisfied with their results. As with any surgery, it’s important to discuss any concerns with Dr. Eliasieh prior to your procedure.
