When your eyelids are turned outward or inward…

Ectropion and entropion are conditions affecting the positioning of your eyelids. Ectropion occurs when your eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner eyelid and causing dryness and irritation. Conversely, entropion happens when your eyelid turns inward, causing your eyelashes to rub against your eye, leading to discomfort and potential damage. Both conditions can impact your eye health and vision, necessitating medical attention to prevent complications. Dr. Kasra Eliasieh, our board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon, offers personalized treatments to restore optimal eye health and vision.

What are ectropion and entropion treatments?

Ectropion and entropion treatments aim to correct the abnormal positioning of the eyelids. Surgical procedures are the most effective approach, where the eyelid’s position is adjusted to restore proper alignment and function. For ectropion, the goal of surgery is to bring the eyelid back to a position where it is against the eye, protecting it. For entropion, the goal of surgery is to tighten the loose eyelid structures so that they do not flip inward, preventing the eyelashes from irritating the eye. In some cases, if the entropion is caused by internal scarring, more advanced procedures including grafts from the lining of the mouth or procedures to rotate the inturning lashes outward can be performed. These treatments alleviate discomfort, protect your eyes, and improve overall eye health. Non-surgical options, such as lubricating eye drops, may also be recommended in some cases.

The steps involved in your ectropion and entropion treatment

During your ectropion or entropion treatment, Dr. Eliasieh will first conduct a thorough examination of your eyelids to assess the severity and specific characteristics of the condition. Ectropion repair usually involves a lateral tarsal strip procedure, which tightens the eyelid. Often with ectropion, there is a relative deficiency of skin due to aging or trauma. In these cases, a skin graft will need to be performed, usually from the clavicle area so that the incision can be hidden underneath clothing. Occasionally, deep sutures can be placed to lift the cheek to avoid the use of a skin graft. Entropion repair can vary depending on what is causing the entropion. Most commonly, entropion is due to laxity of the tissues, and the surgery involves tightening the deep tissues of the eyelid as well as the outer corner of the eyelid. When there is internal scarring that causes the eyelashes to turn inward, an incision can be made inside the eyelid and sutures can be placed to rotate the eyelashes outward. In more severe cases, a graft from the lining of the mouth can be placed.

After the surgery, you will receive detailed post-operative care instructions from Dr. Eliasieh. This includes using prescribed eye drops or ointments to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection. You may experience mild swelling and bruising, which will subside within a few weeks. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress and ensure optimal healing. Dr. Eliasieh’s light touch approach ensures a swift recovery, allowing you to resume your daily activities with improved comfort and eye health.
