When you notice a chalazion or stye on your eyelids

A chalazion or stye is a common eyelid condition characterized by a small, painful lump. A stye, usually caused by a bacterial infection, appears at the base of an eyelash, while a chalazion forms when an oil gland becomes blocked. Both can cause redness, swelling, and discomfort. Although they often resolve on their own, sometimes they require medical treatment or a minor surgical procedure. If you have a chalazion or stye, please contact us to restore optimal eye health to prevent complications.

What is chalazion/stye incision and drainage?

Chalazion/stye incision and drainage is a minor surgical procedure that is often performed on persistent or severe eyelid lumps. When a chalazion or stye does not respond to conservative treatments, a small incision is made to drain the accumulated fluid or pus, relieving pressure and reducing inflammation. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia in the office and most often the incision can be made inside the eyelid to prevent any visible scarring.

The steps involved in your chalazion/stye incision and drainage

During your chalazion/stye incision and drainage procedure, Dr. Eliasieh will first numb the affected area with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Once the area is anesthetized, he will make a small incision on the inside of your eyelid to access the blocked gland or infected area. Using precise instruments, he will carefully drain the accumulated fluid or pus. This helps to reduce pressure and inflammation, providing immediate relief from discomfort.

After the procedure, Dr. Eliasieh will apply a sterile bandage and an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection and promote healing. You will be given specific aftercare instructions and prescribed medications to support recovery. Most patients can return to normal activities with minimal downtime. Follow-up appointments will also be scheduled to ensure proper healing and address any concerns you may have.
